Leave Well | Live Better begins a long time before thinking about actually leaving a role or a career.
It starts with an honest assessment of our passions, our purpose and our fears.
After a lot of thought, I eventually realised that my top purpose is ‘affecting systemic change for people and organisations’. Put simply, this means that I find fulfilment in helping individuals and groups of people (organisations or businesses) to grow, change and maximise their potential.
Our purpose is what fuels the passion that drives our sense of satisfaction.
There’s no use pretending that finding your purpose is always easy. In fact, it’s difficult enough to have spawned many ‘self-help’ guides. I was fortunate – some years ago when I was in the doldrums, a friend helped me isolate my top purpose, albeit after many hours of talking while consuming single malt whisky.
But identifying a purpose – or at least two or three contenders – is essential. Without knowing our purpose, it’s very hard to gain the confidence needed to take major life decisions. If we want to be in a position to Leave Well | Live Better, we must know our purpose.
One way to identify our purpose is to think about what we do when we aren’t working or spending time with our family. All of us have professional and personal responsibilities, but what we choose to do when we are doing neither – perhaps a hobby or interest.
What do you choose to do when you’re not committed to work or family?
